Care and support

The children and young people that we care for have experienced significant adversity and trauma in their lives and at times can be angry and upset at the world around them. We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment where young people can begin to make sense of what they have experienced, learn to place trust in the adults caring for them, and begin to recognise their strengths and what they are capable of achieving.

We value the individuality of young people and the need to meet very different needs with flexible, innovative and child-centred approaches. Young people sit at the centre of everything we do and are actively encouraged to play a meaningful part in the life of the school and the residential setting. Building quality relationships with young people and promoting a culture of mutual respect is of primary importance and one of our key strengths recognised in our inspection reports.

Our continued vision for the future is to ensure that all young people in our care are provided with an environment that allows them to recover from their experiences, to grow and learn, and begin to make positive steps for their future. We are committed to ensuring that that young people achieve in school, in the houses and in the community and develop a positive sense of identify and self-esteem.

Our main site

Our residential provision is committed to delivering high standards of care and supporting young people and families to achieve positive change. We have two residential houses on the main site in Burntisland, situated on the same site and in close proximity to our school.

Both Starley House and The Lodge are well equipped to ensure that young people are actively engaged. Young people have access to a wide range of resources and games that they can use within each house.

On grounds, young people can take advantage of the open space and outdoor activities, including trampolines, basket swings, rope swings, our sports pitch, sand-pits, repurposed kayaks, ‘sit-on’ airplanes, bikes and scooters, pedal go-karts, soft archery and basketball.

Starley Care Services

In addition to our two houses on our main site in Burntisland we have three community houses that provide care placements for young people and, in some circumstances, young adults:

  • Number 76,

  • Tall Trees, and

  • The Bungalow

The community houses can offer residential placements for young people who may still attend and educational placement or provision within their local community.

This can range from primary, secondary, and into tertiary education, or into employment.

Our approaches to assessment and care planning have fully embraced the core components and set of values and principles outlined within the "Getting It Right For Every Child" (GIRFEC) framework. Children and young people sit at the centre of the process and we are committed to working in partnership with families, carers and all other involved professionals and external agencies. Our actions and interventions around young people are informed by a whole child approach that looks to build on their strengths and recognise their potential.

Developing a co-ordinated and unified approach to assessing needs that draws on the expertise of a number of specialisms and areas of expertise allows us to produce a holistic assessment of a young person’s needs and develop a Professional Action Plan which is focused on achieving very specific desired outcomes. Our Therapeutic Services team are invaluable in terms of their contribution to this assessment process and work in partnership with care, education and health to ensure an integrated assessment is produced.

The key team around the young people meet on a regular basis to review the Professional Action plan and evaluate whether the focussed interventions and actions around a young person are having the desired impact.

These regular Focus Group meetings provide a valuable opportunity for all involved individuals to assess and evaluate the progress being made towards achieving the desired outcomes and to change interventions and approaches when it is clear that progress is not being made. This individualised and flexible approach to care planning is supportive to young people and recognises the need to develop innovative, far-reaching strategies and interventions in order to achieve positive change.
